Joshua J. Tanis, Partner

Born and raised in West Michigan, Mr. Tanis received his undergraduate degree in Political Science with a minor in Philosophy — from Grand Valley State University with honors.

Mr. Tanis graduated cum laude from the Thomas Cooley Law School and focuses his practice in the areas of divorce and custody, criminal defense, contracts, estate planning and general civil litigation.

He currently holds memberships with the Grand Rapids Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan, the American Bar Association and the Federal Court‘s Western District of Michigan.


Steven D. Schultz, Partner

Mr. Schultz received his undergraduate degree in International Relations from James Madison College at Michigan State University before graduating from Michigan State University‘s Detroit College of Law.

Mr. Schultz has extensive experience in the areas of workers‘ compensation, social security disability, automobile and No-Fault litigation, nationwide insurance subrogation, corporate law, contracts, creditor‘s rights and general civil litigation — at both the district and circuit court levels.

Mr. Schultz holds memberships with the Workers‘ Compensation Section of the State Bar, the Grand Rapids Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan and the Federal Court‘s Western District of Michigan.

When not working, Steve enjoys spending time with his family, boating, playing competitive sports and traveling.


James M. Scozzari, Associate Attorney

Born and raised in New York, Mr. Scozzari received his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from SUNY Stony Brook University in New York.

Mr. Sozzari then moved to Grand Rapids to attend the Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School and focuses his practice areas in personal injury, corporate law, insurance law, criminal defense, employment law, contracts, and appellate practice.

He currently holds memberships to the Grand Rapids Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan, and the Federal Court's Western District of Michigan.


Matthew T. Berry, Associate Attorney

Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Matt received his Bachelor’s Degree in English, with an emphasis on Language & Literature and a minor in Writing, from Grand Valley State University.

Matt graduated magna cum laude from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School. While in law school, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Law Journal and a Senior Associate Editor for Law Review. His practice areas include, but are not limited to, criminal defense, civil litigation, family law, contracts, commercial litigation, personal injury, estate planning, appellate practice, and business law.

Matt currently holds memberships in the State Bar of Michigan, Grand Rapids Bar Association, and the Federal Court’s Western District of Michigan.

When not working, Matt enjoys backpacking, hiking, running, snowboarding, mountain climbing, camping, kayaking, reading, live music, and spending time with his family.


Elizabeth A. Yard, Associate Attorney

Ms. Yard was born in Michigan and attended school in Minnesota. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Hamline University, and received her law degree from Hamline University School of Law. During law school, Ms. Yard competed on the Mock Trial team, and completed a clerkship at the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

Ms. Yard returned home to Grand Rapids to practice law. She has litigation experience, and focuses her practice on workers’ compensation and social security disability. She is licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan, and also holds Federal licenses including the District of Minnesota, Central District of Illinois, and the Western District of Michigan.

When she isn’t working, Beth volunteers as a mock trial coach at Caledonia High School. She also enjoys travel, boating, and spending time with her family.


Melissa Meyers, Associate Attorney

Practice Description & Experience

Family Law: Melissa began the practice of family law in 2002 and has gained extensive experience dealing with all areas of family law including, divorce, custody, parenting time, spousal and child support, neglect/abuse proceedings, domestic private and step-parent adoptions and guardianships. She is currently planning on expanding her expertise to domestic mediations.

Criminal Law: Melissa began her career as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney while in Law School and continued after graduation. She has extensive misdemeanor and felony jury trial experience with charges of civil infractions, drunk driving, domestic violence, drug, criminal sexual conduct, and attempted and first degree murder in both State and Federal Courts.

Civil Litigation: Melissa also has extensive litigation experience in a wide variety of civil matters including business and property disputes, landlord – tenant law, real and personal property disputes, collections and numerous other general civil litigation matters.

Estate Planning: Recognizing the need for the protection of family and assets Melissa has expanded representation of her clients to general Estate Planning involving Wills, Trusts, Financial and Healthcare Power of Attorney.

Community Activities, Family & Hobbies

Melissa is actively involved with her family, church, United Way, Women Lawyers Association and the Christian school system. She currently coaches her daughter’s Destination Imagination Team at Muskegon Christian School and is a member and competitor through the Michigan Mountain Biking Association. Melissa also enjoys swimming, skiing, traveling and cooking with her family.
